The New York Times - Visual Investigations

Role: Graphics Editor

Since 2021, I have served as the Graphics Editor for the Visual Investigations team at The New York Times.

Visual Investigations is a pioneering form of journalism that combines traditional reporting with the analysis of visual evidence to uncover the truth, deconstruct current events, and hold the powerful accountable.

At The Times, I lead the design and animation of VI's reports, enhancing storytelling and maximizing the impact of major news stories and enterprise investigations by creating precise and informative visual sequences. Additionally, my background in post-production contributes to the analysis and examination of visual evidence.

In 2023, I was honored to be one of the recipients of the 2023 Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting for our coverage of Russian atrocities in Bucha, Ukraine.

Bucha

Creative Direction and Animation

Tasked with leading viewers through a complex body of evidence, I designed the motion graphics to be both elegant and functional. Locators, annotations, and maps were used sparingly, providing support to the edit and consistently orienting viewers.

To illustrate the scope of our reporting, I created robust animation sequences that transparently showcase the intricacies of the investigative process. Significantly, overlaying the locations of civilian casualties with evidence of Russian forces, their routes through Bucha, presents an argument greater than the sum of its parts: This unit was present where civilians were killed, when they were killed.

Our work garnered recognition and praise, even from an investigator at the prosecutor's office of the International Criminal Court, who commended our "incredible investigative work." They further expressed that our presentation of the facts was so compelling that it could be directly utilized in a courtroom setting.

China Surveillance

Creative Direction , Editing, and Animation

As part of The New York Times Visual Investigations team, I played a pivotal role in the creation of this SOPA-winning piece that details expanding surveillance practices in China. Over the course of a year, our team analyzed over a hundred thousand government bidding documents, unearthing the extensive scope of China's ambition to collect personal data from its citizens.

I edited, animated, and creative directed this motion graphics-heavy documentary that leverages on-site footage, studio shoots, document presentations, and explanatory visual sequences to reveal the scale, ambitions, and limitations of China’s surveillance state.
